The once beautiful Reenroe Hotel outside Waterville. While we were in Kerry a few weeks ago, I couldn’t pass up the chance to see it again. The first time I had come across the ruins of this building was approximately ten years ago when I was holidaying in Kerry.
Its easy to see the attraction the Reenroe Hotel would have had in its heyday, with its mountainous backdrop, stunning vistas over the Atlantic Ocean, and the golden sands of Inny strand a short stroll away. It even boasted a landing strip for private planes.
The three photos below were taken when I was there first.
Today the hotel is no more than a carcass. Any remnants of its prime have been stripped from it and its rusted steel structure is gradually weakening. It is now little more than a blight on the beautiful landscape, the end result of unfulfilled dreams, recession and planning objections.
If you like Brutalist architecture, then the hotel was indeed beautiful. I personally don’t like that style and always felt the hotel was bloody ugly. But the local scenery… now that is something altogether different. Stunning location.
It’s an awful shame that the hotel could not have been developed as planned in recent years.
It’s totally wrong and disengineous for such a scenic area to be curtailed by international interests.
If we are serious about developing rural Ireland, common sense must prevail.
